This Is Why We Fight The Purpose Behind DRD Law

In this first installment of a three-part series inspired by Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle, attorney David Drwencke, founding partner of DRD Law, shares the deeper purpose that drives his criminal defense practice. From childhood aspirations to a calling shaped by family values and years of courtroom experience, David explains why defending the accused is more than a profession—it’s a mission rooted in dignity, justice, and standing up against overwhelming odds.

Why Did David Drwencke Choose a Career in Criminal Defense?

David Drwencke shared that his passion for becoming a lawyer started as early as preschool. Even before he fully understood what an attorney did, he knew it was his calling. His upbringing, shaped by parents who emphasized helping others, giving back, and volunteerism, instilled in him a strong sense of service.

During nearly seven years of clerkship, criminal defense specifically called to him because it placed him in the courtroom every day, representing real people facing real challenges. Unlike corporate or insurance work, these cases involved individuals experiencing fear, anxiety, and life-altering stakes. For David, the satisfaction comes from standing up against the odds, knowing the system isn’t perfect but fighting to secure results for people when the deck feels stacked against them.

His core motivation is rooted in helping others, lowering their stress during the most difficult times of their lives, and using his skills to fight back against bullies.

How Does Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle Influence DRD Law?

David explained that Simon Sinek’s Start With Why resonated deeply with his own philosophy. The book’s focus on purpose beyond making money reflects the foundation of his practice. While many attorneys differentiate themselves by years of experience or number of trials, David emphasized that what truly matters is why a lawyer does this work.

For him, the “why” is about defending dignity, standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, and embracing cases others might turn away from. He stressed that everyone deserves a defense, regardless of the accusations against them, and that treating clients with respect and dignity is at the heart of his firm’s mission.

How Does David Drwencke Define Justice?

Justice, according to David, goes far beyond winning or losing cases. He acknowledged that allegations are easy to make and often rest on little more than someone’s word. That reality is terrifying because anyone—family, friends, or even himself—could find themselves in that position.

He explained that his role is to stand between the state and his client. The state has vast resources—police, detectives, labs, prosecutors, and societal presumption—all aligned against the accused. David views himself as the one person standing in the way, pushing back and tipping the scales in favor of his client.

For him, justice isn’t just about the outcome. It’s also about guiding clients through a slow, frustrating process with dignity, communication, and respect. While results matter, how the attorney handles the process is equally important.

Does a Criminal Defense Attorney Need to Believe Their Client?

David addressed one of the most common questions he receives: whether a lawyer must believe the client. For him, belief in guilt or innocence is not the focus. Instead, he emphasizes the right of every individual to be defended with dignity.

Allegations alone do not determine truth. His role is to challenge the evidence and test whether the state can prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. He explained that many clients claim innocence, and through investigations and cross-examinations, it often becomes clear that falsehoods or misconduct occurred.

His focus is always on what can be proven, not merely what is alleged. Whether the goal is a not guilty verdict, a reduced charge, or an alternative resolution, David sees his job as protecting rights, securing fair outcomes, and ensuring clients are treated with respect throughout the process.

What Do People Misunderstand About Criminal Defense?

David acknowledged that many outsiders view criminal defense attorneys as representing “bad people.” At social gatherings, he is often asked how he can defend individuals charged with murder, sex crimes, or other serious offenses. His answer is that clients are people first—fathers, mothers, spouses, sons, and daughters—who find themselves in difficult circumstances.

He highlighted that allegations alone often place people into the system, sometimes without supporting evidence. What may appear shocking from the outside is, in reality, a person facing terrifying uncertainty about their future, family, and freedom.

David sees his role as humanizing clients, helping them navigate fear, and standing with them through a process that could otherwise feel hopeless. To him, criminal defense is about recognizing the humanity in every client and fighting to protect their dignity.

What Is the Core Purpose of DRD Law?

When asked to summarize the “why” behind his firm, David explained that DRD Law exists because every human being has dignity. The firm stands up for that dignity, defending rights and fighting for clients not just because it is a profession, but because it is a moral calling.

For David, this is why he fights. Every case is about more than charges or courtrooms—it is about affirming that every client deserves respect, defense, and a fair chance at justice.
